Importing projects from Excel into Wrike

It seems it is currently impossible to import projects and project attributes (start date, end date, owner, description etc) on the project level from Excel into Wrike. Currently it is only possible to import folders and tasks from Excel into Wrike.

I have a list of 50+ projects and it would be very time consuming to import them as folders and then manually convert each of them from a folder into a project and then manually add project attributes to each project.

Can you please prioritize this issue?

Hi Leonila, thanks for your post and welcome to the Community 🙂

You're correct, currently, only Folder/tasks can be directly created in Wrike from a Wrike formatted, Excel template.

You may already be aware you can create the Project in Wrike first and then import the Excel information to that Project. Once a Project is created, you can choose to import by selecting the Project's options (3 dots on the top righthand side) and choose 'Import'. Once you've formatted the Excel document, all the information will be imported to that Project you created including the attributes you've mentioned above.

I understand that creating 50+ Project files is time consuming so I can see why being able to create Projects from an Excel template would be useful here so thank you for sharing this feedback so others can vote and discuss this option 👍

Good afternoon! I don't see an option to import (from within the new project -- the 3 dots on the top, righthand side of the project do not show "Import" as an option. Is this not a feature in the free version? Please let me know. Thank you!

Hi Kat, you're correct, importing Excel files is a feature of paid accounts only. If it's something you're interested in and if you'd like a call back to discuss your options, let me know here and I can arrange this for you.

Is there a way to upload Excel schedules to Wrike as a project rather than a folder? We have a lot of courses that we will need to convert and it will be much more convenient if we can upload as projects. Is that possible?

Hi Jennifer, I understand if you have a lot of Projects to import this may be time-consuming. Right now, you can import Excel to any format except Projects so you will need to convert.

It's now possible to import Projects via excel. Here's an example of what the template should look like.

Note: You need to assign a Status to the Project for it to appear in your Folder Tree.

Hi when I upload using the template above, and assign a project status "Green" into that column for projects, I receive an error upon upload that the Task state value green is not recognized

Still trying to figure this out myself.

All our records on previous systems are at the project level. 10,000+ records of data that needs to be imported.

Every time i try and use the sample file it just creates folders. don't need to be able to import tasks as they will all happen in the future or ad-hoc as we go. I need to structure as below:

• Client Folders populated with client contact data custom fields
- Project populated with description, budget, supplier info etc custom fields

eg:

- Client Name (folder)

- project 1
- project 2
- project 3

I hope that makes sense, importing is quite difficult in it's current method

Hello - trying to import my existing projects into the Wrike system as PROJECTS. I've tried doing the template and have entered info into the "Status" column, however it's just coming up with an error for me and not taking this info on board for migration. Are there specific options that need to be entered into the STATUS column in order to work? What data should i be putting here? I've tried adding "Active" in but this isn't working.

Hi guys, Like the folks above I still can get to import excel information as Projects. No matter what I do It always comes up as folders.

The easiest way to troubleshoot this is to export a project from Wrike to Excel. For example, a project that looks like this:

Will come up like this:

You can see the correct workflow under project and status.

But when importing the same data, it imports like this:
A folder with no status

UPDATE: For other that find their way here. It turns out that if you press the refresh button, wrike will refresh the folder to projects.

Ok I found a way to import sub-sub projects into Wrike.
Simply make sure the 1st line is your folder and then under it is the next project line and then the next sub-sub project line

This way I can now import multiple projects and subprojects into Wrike that show as a project rather than folders.

The below example creates a client folder and then x3 client projects and then under each client project x6 monthly projects.

I was able to import projects and sub-tasks for xls. Make certain you have "Green" in the status of each of the projects.
