Sort function for sub-tasks

I noticed that in list view, tasks can be sorted by name/date/etc. But when a task is opened in the "sub-task" pane, the list of sub-tasks isn't ordered the same way. Instead, it relies on manual sorting order. It would be great to be able to auto-sort sub-tasks similar to the list or table view. See image attached.

This would be really useful for us!

We have some subtasks as checklists in jobs that need to follow an order (but don't need the detail as in depth as dependencies) and can be difficult to read which task is next when they mix about!

Hi Lizzie and Holly, thanks for the feedback! @Lizzie, that's right, the sorting order of subtasks in the task view is the order they were added, and I can see how it could be helpful to have the List View's sorting order carried over. @Holly, thanks for the additional info, great to hear from you!

I second to Dan Hardy's request - it would be awesome to hide completed subtasks.

Why? In our case, we have one parent task to track agendas for team weekly meetings. The agenda for each meeting is created as recurrent task, but it needs to be assigned manually to a parent task. Since the list of subtasks is long, it's difficult to add new ones.

On the other hand - is it only me, or you really can't create a recurrent subtask?

Indeed, this is important for us as well, given we review all projects with the team overall on a weekly basis and the order by alpha throws off the logic of how tasks need to take place in their chronological order... In addition to LIST view, we would need to have this feature added to TABLE view as well.

It is essential that tasks be done in the right order, and it isn't always the order I think of them. It is not appropriate for a list of tasks to be rearranged automatically because an edit is made to one of them. It is cumbersome and unsophisticated for an entire list of subtasks to be renamed manually for ordering because one item needs to be moved or inserted. Further, it is confusing currently because it appears that you can drag these tasks into the order in which they should be, but when I return to the main task after clicking off of it I find that the subtasks have again reverted to chronological order. This is a pretty big problem for me and it would seem the solution has been halfway implemented already since the tasks can be dragged to order in the first place - they just don't stay.

Absolutely agree! It's very confusing for a long list of subtasks to be out of order for both us & our client.

Not having a sort function for sub-tasks is a real time waster - having to manually order things, after one has already set sub task due dates etc... where sub tasks could be easily sorted on date, title, due date, creation date, importance and a range of other factors. Cheers.

Wrike has the capability to sort by title and the request by many (for years) is to include this option for subtasks.

To be effective, is there a better way for users to request enhancements? On this community board, the needs are acknowledged, but not fixed.

Another example is to "Expand All" in the List view. Wrike has the capability in the Table view - please include this as an option in "List".

Hi @Brittany Lerch, apologies for the delay in response here.

One possible workaround is to utilise the sorting in List View. Subtasks can be sorted by due date in this view, so this could provide you with the sorting options that you need.

At the moment, it is currently not possible to automatically sort sub-tasks in the Task view. If anything changes in regards to this, I'll be sure to pass it on to you.

Definitely need this feature, manually sorting a list of twenty tasks, and then re-sorting them when dates or priorities change is frustrating and time-consuming. I've also noticed that subtask ordering seems to be randomized when adding subtasks via request forms? Unless I'm using the conditional subtask feature wrong.

Unfortunately I don't think that workaround would work very well for us for a couple of reasons.

One being that we encourage our team members to use their Dashboard as their primary information source for what needs to get done. When you click on a task in the dashboard, you get that full-screen overlay task view, which is great for us because it minimizes distractions since you can't see other tasks and projects unless you exit. But there's no easy way to get to the list view from there.

Secondly, we often use blueprints to create multi-step tasks with subtasks for each step. When we create these, we put the subtasks in order but don't necessarily assign dates or durations to them because the timeframes aren't always the same. If Wrike would save and keep the order that subtasks are manually sorted into without needing exact dates, then that would solve our problem.

Even if dates were assigned and we used the list view to view the chronological order of tasks, it doesn't reorganize the subtasks in the task view to match.

Thank you for your excellent questions!

First off, as you already know, it is currently not possible to sort the subtasks on the Task view, other than by manually dragging and dropping them. Sorting them in the List view is still the best workaround. However, any sorting that is done on the List view (or any other view) will not carry over to the Task view, except when sorting by Priority and manually changing the subtask order by drag and drop.

You mentioned working primarily from the dashboard. The good news is that many dashboard widgets can be opened in the List view from the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the widget (https://help.wrike.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004120265-Dashboard-Widgets#settings), which will allow you to utilize the sorting options of the List view for your tasks and subtasks.

With regards to the subtasks added by the conditional questions on request forms, I'm afraid that at this time it's not possible to setup the request form to make your subtasks appear in a specific order in the Task view. You will still need to drag and drop them into the order you want to see.

When creating from a blueprint, your subtasks should maintain the order they were manually set to within the parent task on the blueprint. However, this is not necessarily the order that Wrike creates them when you use the blueprint, so your subtasks may appear more randomly arranged on the List view when sorting by date created, but in the Task view they should remain in the same order as the original.
