Better UI to designate FOLLOWERS (not assignees)

The UI for adding followers to a task should be easier to use, similar to the "Assign" UI.

The current UI is buried in a menu, hard to get to, and hard to add people while the "assign" UI is easy and accessible. The end result is it encourages people to add too many "assignees" who aren't responsible for the task.

It could function a bit like a "CC" on an email (need to be aware, no action needed) or an "informed" designation on a RACI matrix.

Hi Alex, thanks for posting! I love how you compare this with the "CC" of an email, in its simplicity that's pretty much the main point of following, so I do agree that a faster/clearer way to designate followers could be helpful.

I need to add regularly several followers to several Tasks at a time.

It looks like there hasn't been activity on this in a while, but I totally agree with @Alex Freund and @Walter Bläs that the UI for followers should be better, and I also agree you should be able to add other people as followers through mass actions.

To view current followers of a task it still requires you to click "Edit followers".

Is there a way to add Followers as a custom field?

The issue is we are creating multiple separate tasks for different people, when realistically we could just reassign the task to a Follower who is involved with the project, but not actively working on it just yet.

If you have multiple assignees, it can be confusing to understand who is actively working on the task and who it currently sits with.

From a project management level, you can see who's currently subscribed to the task at a glance, not just the assignee.

It's not currently possible to add a custom field with followers automatically - I will share this feedback with the responsible team.
I understand how assigning several people to a task can be confusing - for that, we recommend breaking that task into several work items that are represented by subtasks and assigning them to specific people. Can this approach work for you?

Hi, We have a need for something like this as well – a kind of cc: that automates sharing in a structured and automated way for internal partners (individuals or groups) who need to be engaged with a task or project, but not necessarily assigned to it.

Rough idea:

CC'd people* automatically added via field (native or custom)

Have a native field or be able to create a custom people field called "CC'd"
Use the "CC'd" field in a request form
When the form is submitted and a new item created, whoever is identified in the "CC'd" field is automatically added as a follower who can add comments, review and add comments on attachments (unless locked by higher-priv role), and see custom field values, but not able to change the status, assignees, field values.

Editing/Updating CC'd

Because "CC'd" added from the initial creation may change groups or leave, will need some way to remove and add new cc'd people from this field:

"CC'd" can remove themselves from individual tasks/projects or in bulk
Space members or assignees with priv to do so can remove cc'd from individual tasks/projects or in bulk

*CC'd might not be the right terminology/approach, but something like that.

Note: Not sure how this fits in with current task/project sharing or following functionality.
