Linking to another project task as a dependency or predecessor & date roll up

How do I link to another project task as a predecessor or dependency?

ie. I have Project X and need to know when task 100 from Project Y and task 200 from Project Z will finish. If I add Project Y and Project Z under Project X, then is there a danger of being able to update Project Y or Project Z tasks (even if by accident)?

Reason I ask is that I have inherited Project X and it does not have date roll up enabled. I would have gone ahead and enabled date roll up, but feared that it would then enable rollup or Project Y & Z also.

Hi @Ryan Hunter, using the Table View or the Gantt Chart you can create predecessors for tasks in different projects without putting them under the same project. You can find instructions on how to create them here and I'm attaching an example screenshot. Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Ryan,

I use the Gantt Chart to set predecessors with the same project, but if I need to make create a dependency from a task in a different project I copy the permalink and set this on on e of the projects tasks, I go to the icon that says "Dependency" and copy de permalink either o the predecessor or successor area and then change if it is FS or SS.

Is there a way to have sums or data from a field in Project A populate into a field on project B? I am putting together tables to track projects as well as change orders and project estimates.

On linking the dependency to another project - using the copy paste of link - how do you go about showing these dependencies as they don't show on the Gantt chart view?

Hi all, Can you create a linkage between tasks so that if 1 owner has 2 tasks across 2 projects that they can update 1 project and it will in turn update the 2nd automatically? we have the case were we have 1 owner across multiple projects and they don't want to have to go into each project to update their status when it's the same action/timeline across all project.

Hi @Megan O'Kelly, welcome to the Community! Thank you for sharing your use case with us. Is the same task included in two different projects? If that's the case, the changes should apply to the task regardless of the location you're accessing it from - meaning, the changes will be visible in both projects.

Hi, I have the same issue/request: When managing digital projects it often happens that our Testing environment is blocked by a project and other projects can not advance if the current project has not been "liberated". It would be awesome to have a way to link a task of one project to the task of another project, so that these dependencies are respected and dont need to be updated manually whenever there is one small change.

We handle a lot of small projects at the same time..

Hi @Juan Sorry no I don't mean the location is different, the projects are tracked in different folders, we have 300+ tasks in each project but there can be multiple projects ongoing at the same time (on the same timeline) so some of the same teams (who work across multiple projects) are having to update each project for each of their tasks, rather than just updating 1 that's linked to all of the projects. I'm already using a dependancy to automatically calculate the due date of the tasks, is it possible to add in more than 1 dependancy?
