A really handy feature would be the ability to create and apply templates to task descriptions outside of custom item types and blueprints. Although those are always my first line of defense for making sure certain types of work are pre-loaded with the best possible description, I've noticed over the years that there are quite a few edge cases that doesn't always make this possible.
Our use cases:
- Sometimes we convert tasks to our "Bug" custom item type, but we use a specific template to capture "how it's supposed to work" and "what it's actually doing". But when you convert a task to a custom task, it doesn't pull in the template, nor does it give you the option to prepend or append the description with the template. Right now, we either skip this step or I manually have to copy and paste it from the Bug custom item type's description. These tasks sometimes come from another team, or a PO determines it's a Bug, not a User Story.
- Same goes for converting a task to our "User Story" custom item type.
- Could also be super helpful for creating quick Creative Briefs or Meeting Agenda outlines. We try to minimize our custom item types, because it adds an extra layer of complexity, especially when it comes to then revising dashboards to ensure the right things show up.
Couple of ways I imagine this working:
- MVP solution: When converting a task to a custom task type, give us a prompt to prepend or append the custom task type's description into the existing task.
- Larger solution: Add a "Templates" option into the little nav bar above the task description (in-line with subitems and dependencies) OR in the rich text editor bar where we can create, apply (prepend or append), edit, and delete task description templates. (I imagine this could end up being similar to how custom fields are managed.)
Several years ago I used the "Rally" software to help dev teams manage their work and this was a such a helpful feature! As always, thanks for the consideration!
