Types of Projects or Tasks

We basically do three types of products or tasks.

Gold - Strategic Brand Initiatives
Green - Revenue Generating
Everything Else

I considered having folders for Gold and Green to cross-categorize these items and to be able to see them on Gantt Charts or Reports, but should I consider custom fields instead? Like "Type?"

Based on the goal of being able to count and progress projects deemed as Gold or Green, what would you suggest?

Hey Jason, this is absolutely what we use custom fields for. All items of work (project, or task) gets a work type assigned to it. This means you can use that field for reporting, filtering in different views, dashboards etc.

We have custom task blueprints that we use, so our tasks are separate from another department's tasks, then we can filter from there with custom fields as Talia says. I assigned an image to our custom task so it's easy at a glance to see what type of task we are working with. I want to create more custom tasks, but I feel the feature is a little complicated as it doesn't show on certain pages due to being locked to our space.

If your gold and green initiatives are high-level, they might be an excellent fit for the custom item types (CITs) within Wrike. We're currently utilizing a set of CITs, which include Campaign, Program, Sub-Program, Deliverable, Task-Generic, and Product Release. Each of these CITs has custom layouts that highlight the most important fields relevant to their specific purposes.

One of the key benefits of Wrike is its flexibility, particularly when it comes to leveraging blueprints. These blueprints are instrumental in streamlining project setup and execution, as they allow for the creation of predefined structures and processes that can be easily replicated across different projects. By incorporating custom fields into each blueprint, you can ensure that all necessary information is captured and organized consistently. These custom fields and CITs are also critical for reporting purposes.

While the sheer amount of customization options, such as CITs, custom fields, blueprints, and forms, can seem a little overwhelming at first, they provide the flexibility and tools necessary for success.

I often find it useful to use both CIT (custom item type) and a custom field. The use of custom field allows you to use automation rules when you set these values, which you cannot do with a CIT. But the CIT allows tailoring the task/project attributes to meet your needs.

You could achieve both the folder and custom field routes without too much duplicative effort by setting up an automation: When custom field changes to gold > add to gold folder. The custom item type is valuable, though, for visualizing at a glance when viewing on a calendar since you have the icon for reference in addition to color coding.
