TL;DR: Following a task in Wrike lets you track its progress and receive notifications about changes. Open the task, click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select Follow.
Hey Community! 👋
Ever needed to stay in the loop on a task you're not directly working on? That's exactly what the Follow feature is for. When you follow a task, Wrike keeps you updated on what's happening without you needing to be assigned to it.
Let's walk through how it works.
What Happens When You Follow a Task?
When you follow a task, you'll receive notifications about changes to:
- Assignees
- Start and due dates
- Status
- Description
- Comments
These updates appear in your Stream and can also be sent to your email, depending on your email notification preferences.
How to Follow a Task
- Open the task in Item view.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Follow from the dropdown.
That's it. You're now following the task.
Want to Add Someone Else as a Follower?
- Open the task in Item view.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Edit followers.
- Click the + icon.
- Search for and select the user you want to add.
How to Unfollow a Task
No longer need updates? Here's how to stop following:
- Open the task in Item view.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Unfollow.
To remove another user as a follower:
- Open the task in Item view
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Edit followers.
- Hover over the person's name and click the x that appears.
How to Track Your Followed Tasks
Apart from stream, you can also add a "Tasks I Follow" dashboard widget to see all the tasks you're tracking in one place. This is especially useful if you follow tasks across multiple projects and want a centralized view.
📝 Please Note: This widget only shows tasks you've manually followed (clicked the Follow button), not tasks you follow automatically.
Real-World Example
Let's say you're a marketing manager and your designer is working on a new campaign banner. You're not creating the banner yourself, but you need to know when the status changes or when comments are added. Instead of asking for updates, just follow the task. You'll see every update in your Stream automatically.
Good to Know
Detail | What to expect |
|---|
Auto-follow | You automatically become a follower when you are assigned to a task, create a task, comment on a task, are @mentioned in a comment , or when someone shares a task directly with you. |
Can't unfollow if assigned | You cannot stop following a task you're currently assigned to. Remove yourself as an assignee first. |
@followers in comments
| When writing a comment on a task, type @followers to notify all followers at once. A quick way to loop everyone in without tagging people individually. |
Following ≠ Assigning | Followers track progress or updates via the Stream. Assignees are responsible for completing the work and see the task in their "My To-Do." |
Subtasks are separate | Unfollowing a task does not automatically unfollow its subtasks. You'll need to unfollow each subtask individually. |
